Number 84: Tasting Menu at a Three-Star Michelin Restaurant (Pt 2) and Number 17: Black Truffle

5 Apr

If you missed out on part one of my dinner at Alinea,
click here to catch up.  Otherwise, let’s get back into this!  I left off with course #8, which had Amy and me drinking beet juice out of a giant block of ice.  Bizarre.  Tasty, but bizarre. Continue reading

Number 84: Tasting Menu at a Three-Star Michelin Restaurant

4 Apr

Alright, it’s finally time to tell you all about the grand finale of this challenge!  This past Friday, my friend Amy and I celebrated my birthday dinner at Alinea, Chicago’s only three-star Michelin restaurant.  We had to make reservations three months in advance, and I can see why.  The restaurant is world-renowned and was even named the World’s Top Restaurant by Elite Traveler Magazine.  Holy jeez. Number 13: PB&J Sandwich

10 Feb

There is nothing more classic than a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.  I can’t even count how many times I brought one for lunch in grade school (is it just me, or did the jelly always soak through the bread and make it soggy?) and I have made more than a few in my adult life, as well.  But here’s the thing: they’re kind of boring.  Everybody has tried one and everybody knows what they taste like.  So I decided to do the only thing I could think of to “spice up” the sandwich.  I made a PB&J sampler platter, complete with 3 different kinds of peanut butter and two different kinds of jelly. Number 77: Hostess Fruit Pies – Revisited (Kinda)

6 Dec

After I posted my Hostess Fruit Pie post about a month ago, I found an email in my inbox from Mr. Onion.  He asked if I had tried Hubig’s fruit pies, which are apparently the patron pies of New Orleans.  Being a Chicagoan, I hadn’t, so Mr. Onion insisted on sending me some.  I never expected, however, that he would send me seven flavors: lemon, coconut, apple, chocolate, banana, pineapple, and peach!  Woot! Continue reading

Number 77: Hostess Fruit Pie

27 Oct

I have not been to the gym in something like 2 1/2 months.  First it was the stress from leaving my job, then it was my European trip, now it’s the stress of the new dog…basically I’m an excuse-spitting couch potato.  Which is why I was positively dreading today.  What is today?  Oh, just the day that I gorge myself on not one, but five different Hostess fruit pies! Continue reading

Number 18: Fruit wine made from something other than grapes

21 Sep

Not only did I find some terrific venison pies at the Fife Farmers’ Market, but I also stumbled across the very cleverly named Cairn o’ Mohr (say it a few times to yourself) fruit wine stall.  Jackpot!  For a mere £6, I could choose between bramble, gooseberry, raspberry, and strawberry, amongst others.  We also got to taste any of the flavors before buying!  Double jackpot! Continue reading
